The Supreme Court: How Social Buzz Drove 20,000+ Ticket Sales in a Week | Social Engagement & Driving Revenue
Client/Employer: Seattle Mariners
When Mariners icon Félix Hernández threw the first Perfect Game in franchise history, and just the 23rd in MLB history, it became an instant cultural moment. We moved fast to turn the viral energy around “#Felixing” into real-world ticket sales, transforming a social celebration into nearly 40,000 tickets sold to celebrate the accomplishment with a special event called “The Supreme Court.”
Problem: The Mariners wanted to capitalize on the momentum of Félix Hernández’s Perfect Game, but the timeline to promote an upcoming start was incredibly tight—less than one week. Traditional media buying and print promotion weren’t feasible.
Strategy: Use organic and earned social media to amplify excitement, mobilize the fanbase, and turn an iconic moment from the game (Félix’s celebration) into an online movement that fans could participate in.
Execution: We launched a campaign anchored by the hashtag #Felixing, encouraging fans to mimic Félix’s iconic celebration pose. The trend quickly caught fire, drawing participation from fans, influencers, and even other Seattle sports figures like Sounders player Fredy Montero. We then announced “The Supreme Court,” a special promotion which expanded Félix’s traditional cheering section, “The King’s Court,” to the entire ballpark—turning his next start into a full-stadium event. Custom T-shirts were printed, game-day promotions were adjusted, and the push happened almost entirely through social media, email, and Mariners.com.
Results: Despite no traditional media spend, over 39,000 fans attended the Tuesday night game, a full 25,000 more than the previous night’s game. The promotional efforts also generated massive earned media value, helping demonstrate the power of social media not just for engagement, but for driving real-time, bottom-line business outcomes—turning viral momentum into ticket revenue in under a week.
Attendance - Series vs. Indians (in thousands)
Nearly 40,000 fans showed up to celebrate Félix Hernández on less than a week’s notice.
